Swingtown: Bravo Picks Ups CBS Drama; Good News for Season Two?

Cable channel Bravo has purchased the exclusive rights to air CBS' summer drama, Swingtown. Does this mean there will be a second season?

Swingtown debuted on Thursday, June 5, 2008 on CBS. The series was executive produced by show creator Mike Kelley and Jericho's Carol Barbee. Set in the summer of 1976, Swingtown follows three families as they explore new freedoms and shifting moral values in Chicago suburbia. The series stars veterans of cancelled shows like Molly Parker (Six Feet Under), Grant Show (Melrose Place), Lana Parrilla (Spin City), Josh Hopkins (Pepper Dennis), Miriam Shor (Big Day), and Shanna Collins (Wildfire).

CBS' President of Entertainment, Nina Tassler, gave the drama a greenlight in May 2007 after HBO had passed on the project. It was expected to air during the regular 2007-08 season but CBS decided to delay the series until Summer, typically a time used to burn off less desirable programming. Critical and

Fox Now Rides High On Thursday

18 July 2008 10:25 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Thursday night, once dominated by NBC, then taken over by CBS, which was then challenged by ABC, has fallen into the clutches of Fox and its So You Think You Can Dance performers. The network averaged 7.78 million viewers Thursday, edging out CBS with 7.14 million. Each network wound up with a 4.9 rating and a 9 share. ABC placed third with a 3.1/6 while NBC trailed with a 2.6/5. Fox also completely ruled among adults 18-49. Surprisingly (for a documentary series) ABC's new Hopkins came out ahead in the 10:00 p.m. hour, scoring a 4.3/8. CBS's Swingtown placed second with a 4.1/7, while NBC's Fear Itself had much to fear as it drew a 2.0/4.

Protesters Targeting Edgier Network Programming

7 July 2008 10:36 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Network executives trying to attract younger viewers with edgier fare have been stymied by protests directed at the show's advertisers, Advertising Age observed today (Monday), pointing out that North American Philips recently withdrew ads for Norelco products from CBS's Swingtown after receiving five complaints from viewers. "It is a shame," one media buyer told the trade publication. "When the networks try to push the envelope a little and try to be more like HBO, the advertisers run away." The Parents Television Council, which takes credit for the FCC's crackdown on allegedly indecent broadcasts, is urging CBS affiliates not to air the drama. All of which, according to AdAge, has forced CBS to use time on the program for "make-goods" and "bonus units" -- essentially free ads that the network gives away when one of its programs does not deliver a guaranteed number of viewers or when it enhances a sales package with extra ads to attract advertisers.

ABC (W)Hoops It Up

11 June 2008 10:36 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The first two games of the NBA finals produced the best initial ratings for the championship series in four years. Sunday's telecast, which drew 13.5 million viewers, attracted an audience that was 60 percent larger than the comparable game a year ago. Although it did not land in the top ten (largely because three shows tied for ninth place) the new CBS drama Swingtown got off to a solid start with 9 million viewers. Washington Post TV writer Lisa de Moraes said that the show received "a promo shot in the arm" from the Parents Television Council, which urged CBS stations to drop it because of its allegedly salacious content. The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:1. NBA Finals - Game 1, ABC, 8.7/16; 2. NBA Finals - Game 2, ABC, 8.5/15; 3. 60 Minutes, CBS, 6.5/13; 3. (Tie) Csi: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 6.5/11; 5. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 6.4/10; 6. Million Dollar Password, CBS, 6.3/11; 7. Csi: Ny, CBS, 6.2/11; 8. Csi: Miami, CBS, 6.1/10; 9. House (Monday), Fox, 6.0/9; 9. (Tie) Ncis, CBS, 6.0/10; 9. (Tie) So You Think You Can Dance (Wednesday), Fox, 6.0/10.

PTC Swings At Swingtown

10 June 2008 10:28 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Brent Bozell's powerful Parents Television Council, which has been responsible for generating most of the complaints to the FCC about "indecent" television programming, has asked CBS affiliates to refuse to carry the network's new drama Swingtown. In a statement, the PTC accused CBS of ignoring "common sense broadcast decency standards. ... "We are asking all CBS affiliates to consider preempting this show or to air it later."
