Chicago – Be honest, TV fans. Fall 2008 was lackluster at best. The TV season really starts now.
With the strike delaying production on established series and the development of new ones, many more programs are returning or premiering in Jan. 2009 than the average mid-season. It couldn’t have come at a more important time for the medium, too.
To be blunt, the first 31 days of 2009 could be one of the most important months in the history of television. It comes down to this - If established hits like “24,” “Damages,” “Nip/Tuck,” “Monk,” “American Idol,” “Battlestar Galactica,” “Lost,” and “The Closer” don’t meet expectations and if a new show like “United States of Tara,” “The Beast,” “Lie To Me,” or “Trust Me” can’t take off and become an established hit, television is likely to change forever.
Sound like an exaggeration? Consider this - NBC gave up on an hour of original,

Monday's Big Winner: The laugh-track sitcom. CBS' The Big Bang Theory (11.4 million viewers, per Nielsen estimates), How I Met Your Mother (11.4 million) and Two and a Half Men (17.9 million), the night's No. 1 show, were up a combined 4 million viewers from last week. The Downside of Success: CBS' Worst Week (12.1 million) had an even bigger Two and a Half Men lead-in to squander, and let NBC's Heroes (7.8 million) into the game in the adult 18-49 demo at 9:30 p.m. Anything Else to Say About Heroes? Nope. It was even with last week. The show officially is what it is—a moderately more powerful Chuck (7.6 million). What Terminator and...

Every Wednesday, our troika of scoop-hunters will answer your questions! (To that end, send all queries to mega_scoop@tvguide.com.) I will be sad when William Petersen leaves CSI, because I don't think he will be able to be replaced. I will watch the first week he is gone, but I don't think I will watch it after that. — Fox
Matt: Normally I turn a blind eye to Mega Buzz questions not phrased as such, but this topic begs addressing. Having sneak-peeked this Thursday's (super-creepy!) episode, in which Gil first shares his decision to leave CSI, I concur that yes, it is going to be very hard to say goodbye come Jan. 15. But

Two and a Half Men was dominant in its return from a holiday break, averaging a Monday- and season-best 15.6 million viewers, Nielsen ratings estimates revealed. NBC's Heroes (7.8 million) was about even with last week, but fell to third in the 9 p.m. hour behind CBS' Two and a Half Men and Worst Week (10.6 million), and the first half of ABC's Boston Legal series finale (9.9 million). (Heroes did run second among the 18-49 set, behind the CBS comedies.) From 9-11 p.m., James Spader's and William Shatner's Boston Legal ended its five-season run before 10.2 million viewers, up about 1 million from its season average. At 8 p.m., The Big Bang Theory (10.8 million) hit a series high, and...

Monday was good to Dancing With the Stars and How I Met Your Mother. Not so much for Heroes. The first part of Dancing's fall season finale was as big as the show's season opener, with 21.3 million viewers, up 1.7 million from last week, Nielsen estimates said. CBS' Mother scored with a season-high 10.1 million, the network said. Its companion comedy, The Big Bang Theory, continued to blow up, clicking with a series-best 10.2 million. On NBC, Heroes' heroes lost their powers. The struggling show itself held steady, with 7.8 million viewers, about even with last week. On the downside, it ran third among adults 18-49 from 9-10 p.m. The CW's One Tree Hill (2.2 million) has...

CBS' The Big Bang Theory has been making a big bang indeed, notching some of its largest audiences ever. Has geek become chic? "I think it's really just word-of-mouth," Johnny Galecki (aka Leonard) says in this 2-on-1 video Q&A. "The show struck a chord." Adds "roommate" Jim Parsons (Sheldon), "People got to find it on their own." Galecki goes on to discuss Leonard's new romance with guest-star Sara Rue's Stephanie. Parsons jumps in to say, "This is a very important relationship for [Sheldon]", as well! But might it elicit a jealous reaction from ...

CBS was back on top of the Nielsen ratings last week in both total audience and the 18-49-year-old demographic. The network made solid gains with several programs. Its 60 Minutes, featuring an interview with President-elect Barack Obama, drew its biggest audience in nine years. Its Tuesday-night drama NCIS registered its biggest audience in its entire six-year run. (A rerun episode on Friday also drew impressive numbers.) Its Friday-night drama The Ghost Whisperer attracted its biggest audience in two years. The network's brand-new Tuesday-night series The Mentalist posted its best numbers ever, as did The Big Bang Theory on Monday. CBS wound up with an average 7.7 rating and a 12 share for the week. ABC placed second with a 6.7/11. Fox took third place with a 4.8/8, while NBC trailed with a 4.1/6.
The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:1. 60 Minutes, CBS, 15.1/23; 2. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 11.9/17; 3. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 11.6/17; 3. NBC Sunday Night Football, NBC, 11.6/18; 5. NCIS, CBS, 11.2/17; 6. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 10.8/16; 7. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 10.3/15; 8. The Mentalist, CBS, 10.1/15; 9. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 9.8/15; 10. CMA Awards, ABC, 9.6/1.

I realize that there are people out there who will never like The Big Bang Theory, and I understand why. Not everybody has the same sense of humor, and not everybody is willing to overlook the hoarier elements of the conventional sitcom. And that’s cool. But if I there’s anyone out there who’s on the fence about The Big Bang Theory, or who’s never seen the show before, I’d say this: Watch “The Lizard-Spock Expansion.” If this episode doesn’t make you laugh, than yeah, this is never going to be the show for you. Most weeks I have to overlook a clunky scene or two in Bbt in order to focus on what makes the show special. This week was clunk-free. Everything clicked, from the introduction of the titular variation on rock-paper-scissors—which pre-dates Bbt, and which I’ll expound upon down in “Stray

In addition to offering the content from the print edition of Variety, the Hollywood industry publication hosts numerous blogs as well. One of the most interesting blogs is called Season Pass where editors discuss TV show news, series they enjoy, and other small-screen related subjects (including a nice mention of this site). They've also been having question and answer sessions with some of their favorite people working in television today. Kathy Lyford, Variety's managing editor, recently interviewed the talented Jim Parsons from CBS' popular The Big Bang Theory TV show.
The Big Bang Theory centers around a foursome of brilliant yet socially-awkward scientists and their female friend. Egotistical Sheldon Cooper (Parsons) and insecure Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) are roommates and live across the hall from Leonard's crush, an aspiring actress named Penny (Kaley Cuoco). The roommates' friends and coworkers are ladiesman-wannabe Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) and Rajesh Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar

Question: I can't tell you how delighted I was to see The Big Bang Theory hit a series-high 10 million viewers last Monday. It is so nice to see people are finally noticing and watching the funniest sitcom on TV. I just love this show. I know it is ridiculously early, but do you think Jim Parsons will get an Emmy nomination this year? Sheldon has become the funniest character on TV, and the creativity and difficulty of learning all the science really makes Parsons a standout. Like I said, I know it is early, but what do you think of his chances, and how about The Big Bang Theory getting a nomination for best comedy show?

Hey, Penny’s back! After spending the last couple of episodes mostly on the sidelines, the character who used to be one of the main drivers for the action on The Big Bang Theory gets her own A-story again—although she does have to share it with Sheldon, and it is one of the hoariest plots in sitcomdom. What we have in “The Panty Piñata Polarization” is the classic “Can you top this?” scenario, often used in sitcoms in the form of “prank wars” between characters, but here seen in the more traditional “revenge for a perceived slight” variation. It begins with Penny snatching an onion ring out of Sheldon’s dinner box while he’s out of the room. Though the gang immediately warns her to put it back, it’s too late: Sheldon spots the disruption, and before he can finish muttering, “Who touched my…,” the gang blurts out,

Question: I was just wondering what you thought about the big House and Cuddy kiss at the end of the most recent House episode. (I know it is dangerous to express an opinion about any of the possible romantic pairings on House, but this is really more about the scene itself than any future romantic possibilities.) I've read some comments calling the kiss "awkward," and I thought (and maybe I'm the only one here) that it being awkward was sort of the point ...

The Big Bang Theory</i>" style="margin:0 5px 5px" />A funny thing happened last week. A quiet little comedy that neither stars Charlie Sheen nor teases us with the identity of a proverbial Mother hit a ratings milestone (9.9 million viewers), putting a certain behemoth of a dance competition to shame in the process. Yep, we're talking about CBS' The Big Bang Theory (Mondays at 8 pm/Et), which in its second season is proving to be one of the most reliable laugh generators on all of prime time. Of course, that's not to say it's immune to the occasional sweeps stunt. Exec producer Bill Prady shared with TVGuide.com a look at how some Top Models get wrapped up in our boy geniuses' world, as well as reveals the show's overall formula for success. (Thankfully, it does not involve string theory.)

"Heroes" and "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" continue to battle low ratings, but it seems "Chuck" is starting to bounce back a little for NBC. The rather light Monday genre show earned a 4.0 rating/6 share according to Fast National ratings from Nielsen Media Research, easily beating "Sarah Connor" on Fox, which managed a series low 3.1/5 just days after getting a full-season pickup by Fox. Both shows were topped by "Dancing with the Stars" on ABC and comedies like "The Big Bang Theory" and "How I Met Your Mother" on CBS. "Chuck's" rating matched its season high from its fall premiere, but it's still nearly 17 percent off its average rating last year. "Sarah Connor" was only a single ratings point better than "Gossip Girl" on The CW, and has now dropped an entire ...

So why a Big Bang Theory blog? Mainly we decided to add Bbt to our Monday TV Club lineup because each week’s How I Met Your Mother blog was becoming a de facto home for Big Bang Theory chat, which wasn’t really fair to people who dropped by each week to talk Himym. But more importantly: A lot of us here at The A.V. Club like this show. (Seriously. You’d be surprised how many people volunteered to do this blog when we discussed adding it.) Early in its first season, The Big Bang Theory strained quite a bit, dropping forced geek references and overplaying the “lusty nerd” angle. And while the show remains a broad comedy that trades on geek stereotypes, its references have become far more natural (and geek-friendly), and its characters have developed the kind of distinctive traits and rapport that shows the writers aren’t.

Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award-nominated series Two and a Half Men boasts of a small but unique cast that brings together Charlie Sheen, Jon Cryer and Holland Taylor in a comedy series that has spanned five seasons, with its sixth beginning a few weeks ago. Tonight, we’ll get to see the gang come back for Episode 6.03, “Damn You, Eggs Benedict,” which sees Charlie attempting to cook while Alan tries dating two women at the same time.
Two and a Half Men is created by Chuck Lorre, the man behind another successful comedy series, The Big Bang Theory. He brings together the wonderful mix of great actors with the ability to create dynamism through comedy and laughter. The show boasts of a cast that includes Holland Taylor, one of the most revered actresses in television today.

Last week on CBS’ The Big Bang Theory, we saw Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) end their relationship, while Leslie Winkle (Sarah Gilbert) made a move on Leonard and proposed to revisit their relationship. Leonard on the other hand, sent Sheldon (Jim Parsons) out of the apartment so that he could have some private time with Leslie, whom Sheldon doesn’t like. Penny returned in time to see Leonard and Leslie and they both fueled the fire of jealousy by making out with their respective partners.
Tonight on The Big Bang Theory, antics ensue as Sheldon introduces Penny to online gaming.
Created and executively produced by Chuck Lorre and Billy Prady, The Big Bang Theory follows two exceptionally smart physicists Leonard and Sheldon, who live across the hall from blonde bombshell Penny. The show is one of today’s most successful sitcoms and stars Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons and Kaley Cuoco.

We were among the many sites to report that low ratings may kill Sarah Connor long before a T-1000 gets to complete the mission. To be far, we should also be reporting that Fox is scoffing at the reports.
"The rumors are all speculative and never fact checked with the network or studio," a rep told i09.
The Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has received okay reviews but the ratings are down to under 6 million viewers which usually bring about a pink slip. The production continues to chug along, fulfilling their order for 13 episodes.
The competition, Mondays at 8 p.m. is quite fierce as they oppose popular sitcoms The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother on CBS, Chuck on NBC, Dancing with the Stars on ABC and Monday Night Football on Espn.
