My wife hates Will Ferrell, yet loves Step Brothers and quotes it daily ("We're here to f**k sh*t up" being her favorite). And unlike me who plugs movie quotes into conversations as if they're Lego blocks, she--like most socially adept humans--rarely quotes films. Yet, you don't know my wife so that probably means nothing to you, but I find the fact she digs a Ferrell film and puppets it to be astonishing. Her behavior drills to the core of Step Brothers' success. Like the previous collaborations between director Adam McKay and Ferrell (Anchorman, Talladega Nights), Step Brothers crackles with anarchic, hilarious lines that sound as if they were thought up during a mescaline-soaked fever-dream. I'm attracted to bizarre, zany dialogue, the sort that lends itself to constant quoting among friends. And I don't deny the immature kid in me giggles even harder when it's especially vulgar (and

Providing the requisite stopgap between showy Thanksgiving distractions and award season stragglers, female directors and assorted indie debutantes are making a strong showing this week.
'What's Eating Elissa Down?' is the question to ask as the award-winning director of Aussie shorts makes the jump to features with this semi-autobiographical tale of a frustrated adolescent on the verge of manhood weighed down by his responsibilities to his autistic younger brother. Daytime soap star Rhys Wakefield takes the role of the Gilbert Grape-esque Thomas, a burdened army brat charged with his brother's care while his parents drag the two up and down the country until he meets Jackie, a free spirit who teaches him how to shed his bitterness. The always impressive Toni Collette anchors this teenage ensemble as the boy's mother, Maggie. Luke Ford and Gemma Ward co-star.
Opens in New York and Los Angeles.

Actress Mary Steenburgen has a charity candle line.
The Parenthood star sells her wares through her RoomsandGardens.com online store and profits help benefit Heffer International, a charity which provides animals to people all over the world and teaches them to care for the creatures.
The actress says, "It (an animal) helps to lift them (people) out of poverty and they in turn pass on the gift."
She's planning to pass on the scented candles she makes as gifts this Christmas: "It's my little green gift for Christmas because it lifts up people and the earth at the same time."

Actress Mary Steenburgen is glad Thanksgiving Day in America is over - she had to cook for 25, and cover everyone's varied diets.
The Parenthood star loved having family and friends around her for the big feast on Thursday, but there was a lot of planning that had to go into the party.
She says, "You have to accommodate a lot of different diets - my husband is vegan, or near vegan, because of his cholesterol, that he's trying to lower naturally.
"So we did a seitan piccata from our favourite restaurant... from their recipe - and that was good."

Versatile composer Christopher Lennertz has two new features coming up. He is doing the music for The Open Road, starring Justin Timberlake and a fine ensemble cast with Jeff Bridges, Kate Mara, Mary Steenburgen, Harry Dean Stanton and Lyle Lovett. Bridges plays Timberlake's estranged father, a baseball legend, and the film follows them on a cross country trip. Wim Wenders collaborator Michael Meredith, himself the son of a great football player (Don Meredith), directs. Christopher Lennertz also contributes the score to Max Mayer's drama Adam, starring Hugh Dancy and Rose Byrne. This film tells the story of a young man struggling with Aspergers syndrome and how finding love helps him to be free. Christopher Lennertz is best known for his entertaining comedy music heard in films such as Alvin and the Chipmunks, Disaster Movie and Meet the Spartans.

Four Christmases Directed by: Seth Gordon Cast: Vince Vaughn, Reese Witherspoon, Robert Duvall, Mary Steenburgen Running Time: 1 hr 22 mins Rating: PG-13 Plot: An evasive couple attempts to forgo sharing Christmas with their slew of family members, but are caught in the act (on national television). Faced with the unthinkable reality of having to withstand four Christmas gatherings, fun-loving Brad [Vince Vaughn] and Kate [Reese Witherspoon] are reminded how powerful the “holiday spirit” is. Who’s It For? Those who haven’t grown tired of watching Vince Vaughn candidly play himself for the umpteenth time, and those who have sincerely believed Ms. Witherspoon can’t “bring the funny.” Expectations: Relatively speaking, Seth Gordon is “merely (a) freshman,” when it comes to film making. This the sixth time he’s taken a seat in the director’s chair, and the first time

Steve Mason is now on Facebook and also on Twitter (For immediate box office updates, "follow" me.) Tuesday 9:30 p.m. (Pacific): The general consensus is that, although Four Christmases (Warner Bros.) is a flawed movie — I'm being kind — it is going to open. It's been very well cast, with Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon pulling Females Under 25, Vince Vaughn pumping up appeal with Males Under 25 and Oscar winners like Robert Duvall, Sissy Spacek and Mary Steenburgen luring in the 25 Plus crowd. The truth is that there is always room for a Christmas comedy at Thanksgiving. The high water mark was 2000's How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which opened with $55 million on its way to $260 million domestic, but there is a proven track record for Christmas-themed films opening either right at Thanksgiving or a week or two before.

Never one to be rushed, director Baz Luhrmann has taken seven years since putting his so-called "red curtain trilogy" to bed before delivering this, the first installment in his announced trilogy of epics. Once more showcasing his fascination with great melodrama, old-school villainy and larger-than-life love stories, Luhrmann has reinvented himself without really reinventing himself with this grandiose romance set against the backdrop of a transforming nation. Returning muse Nicole Kidman stars as Sarah Ashley, a freshly widowed cattlewoman who falls in love with a rugged ranch hand named Drover (Hugh Jackman), as the two drive 1500 head of cattle to Darwin. Unfortunately, they arrive just in time to see the Japanese bombers appear on the horizon.

There are now eight clips in the same player for "Nobel Son" from Freestyle Releasing! This dramedy directed by Randall Miller of "Marylin Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing & Charm School" and stars Alan Rickman, Bryan Greenberg, Shawn Hatosy, Mary Steenburgen, Bill Pullman, Eliza Dushku, Danny DeVito, Ted Danson and Ernie Hudson. Miller also wrote the screenplay alongside Jody Savin. The duo wrote "Bottle Shock" together which also stars Alan Rickman along with Chris Pine, Bill Pullman, Rachael Taylor, Freddy Rodriguez and Dennis Farina. This is quite a catch for the indie distributor and should bring in a decent per-theatre average from its limited release on December 5th. The film made its debut at last year's Tribeca Film Festival.

By now, hopefully all of you who read this blog have seen the wonderful “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.” The documentary became a cult hit instantly as it introduced the world to Donkey Kong rivals Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell. First Showing spoke with the documentary’s director, Seth Gordon, who has “Four Christmases” due out this month, about the narrative remake of “Kong.” Gordon explained that “from the moment we first thought, people might want to see [the documentary], and therefore we might be seeking a theatrical release, it became clear that a narrative remake for it was what film studios would really be interested in.” He adds that New Line always had their eyes set on the remake rights. So after the studio picked it up, the first step was to get the documentary transcribed. “That was the first pass of the script in a sense, but

Jeremy Piven used his Emmy win on Sunday to advertise his next big acting role - on Broadway.
After picking up his third successive acting award for his role in TV hit Entourage, Piven took a camcorder into one of the star-studded Los Angeles after parties - where he told celebrity pals about his forthcoming role in David Mamet play Speed-The-Plow.
In a staged skit, which appears on Will Ferrell's website Funnyordie.com, Laura Dern, Mary Steenburgen, Jamie Foxx and Seth Meyers all warn Piven against taking to the stage.
When he tells Dern and Steenburgen he came from the theatre, they say, "Don't go back." Foxx tells him, "Don't do theatre. Theatre is so, so not hot." And Meyers goads him by joking, "Anyone can do a play. It's what they do at school."
Piven starts his run in Speed-The-Plow on 3 October.

After the highs and lows of the Emmys show the party really got started. For many, the first stop was the Governor's Ball like Heidi in yet another gown before the other bashes. Some were off to the ET/People bash while others went to hear Samantha Ronson spin at Kress nightclub for the TV Guide soiree. Lindsay Lohan came along for the ride and acted as a pillow for Samantha after a long weekend of gigs. Best Dressed candidate Hayden kept posing pretty before tonight's big Heroes return. The Mad Men folks had a lot to celebrate making history with their Best Drama Series win. In the press room the cast were clearly loving every second of it taking photos of each other on their iPhones, Jon Hamm pretending to light a cigarette as an homage to the Don Draper inside him while January Jones talked about how the

The ladies were bursting with color and sparkle at last night's Emmy Awards. Christina Applegate looked positively radiant and was the talk of the night — smiley, happy and healthy. Mary Louise Parker was the most eye catching of all in her bright blue number though you all were fairly divided on the look while Brooke Shields lived up to the name of her show in Lipstick pink. Heidi Klum went dramatic while Eva Longoria was all tied up in a bow with Tony on her arm. Debra Messing was one of Fab's best dressed but what do you think? Just like every year in the U.S., the first Christmas flicks start hitting theaters in November already (don't ask me why). One of them this year is Seth Gordon's "Four Christmases," in which Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon play a couple struggling to visit all four of their divorced parents on Christmas Day.
Although this trailer did not really win me over, I have to admit Vaughn and Witherspoon look like a solid enough team to handle this kind of cheap screwball comedy. Robert Duvall, Jon Favreau, Mary Steenburgen, Dwight Yoakam and Sissy Spacek co-star. "Four Christmases" opens Nov. 26, 2008. Enjoy the preview just above.

If there's a number in a film title you've got a sequel, right? Not necessarily, unless Oceans 1 through Oceans 10 came out on some obscure underground label I've never heard of. The trailers are getting all mathematical on our collective ass this week, and each of them (sort of) sports a number in the title.
It happens every year. The first time I see a sign of the coming holiday season I cringe. I like Christmas fine once it gets here, but being forced to think about it in September is asking too much. Anyway, this is actually a TV spot, which is appropriate since it sounds like the plot was lifted from a sitcom. Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon are playing a couple who, thanks to a canceled flight to Fiji, are forced to visit all four of their divorced parents on Christmas Day. Pretty wacky, huh? This
